About Community Engaged Learning

Embracing the call to strive for living out the deepest sense of community engagement, the Fitz Center uses the term community engaged learning, rather than service learning. Unlike service, which can insinuate doing for and can mislead people into relationships that reinforce inequalities and are paternalistic, community engagement emphasizes working with a community on a shared vision.

Community engaged learning includes a priority focus on sustaining reciprocal relationships with community partners in pursuit of creating meaningful and thoughtful community-based learning opportunities for our students. Using a community engaged learning strategy that integrates discipline and community knowledge to leverage assets and address issues in a community setting, we can better achieve our mission of educating leaders to build communities and creating justice minded citizens who work for the common good.
