Semester of Service

Semester of Service

Twenty students annually take a semester away from full-time study to provide 450 hours of direct service in the Dayton community. Students grow through experiential learning, the creation of intentional community, and professional training and supervision from local social service providers. The program expands the personal world views of participants, facilitates vocational exploration, and empowers them with experience and knowledge to become lifelong advocates for social change. Semester of Service is funded by an endowment and annual grants from the Marianists.

Summer and Fall Semester of Service Application Deadline: February 15
Spring Semester of Service Application Deadline: October 1

Application

The Fitz Center for Leadership in Community's Semester of Service Program aims to encourage growth through experiential learning, the creation of intentional community, and support from local agencies. The semester and summer programs require students to take time off from traditional academic study in order to participate in service-learning projects in social service agencies throughout the City of Dayton. The goal of Semester of Service is to expand the worldview of participants and empower them through experience and knowledge to become life-long advocates for social change.

You will not be attending classes during the Semester of Service except for the weekly mini-course (3 credits) which accompanies the experience. The Summer Program requires community living.

To apply, you must consult with your academic adviser to make sure Semester of Service fits within your academic plan. We encourage you to seek three to six additional semester hours earned through internship or independent study with prior approval from the department chair of your field of study.

To submit an application, please refer to The Fitz Center for Leadership in Community's OrgSync page. If you have any questions, email semesterofservice@udayton.edu or call 937-229-4699.
