World Music on Campus: A Cityfolk Legacy

In 2003, the University of Dayton joined with a lively local performing arts presenter - Cityfolk - to create a new series devoted to world music. Supported initially with funding from the Ohio Arts Council, this partnership brought a new part of the community to campus, and helped expand the diverse programming offered for students.

This decade-long partnership was abundantly fruitful:  campus concerts featured such great names as Simon Shaheen, Luciana Souza, and Vieux Farka Touré. Musicians came from across the world to campus, and occasional residencies provided an opportunity for students of all ages to learn about the wider world.

Late in 2013, however, Cityfolk closed its doors after struggling with significant financial challenges. Although our presenting partner is gone, ArtsLIVE will maintain its commitment to programming world music. At a time when international education has become an essential part of navigating life, the University's World Rhythms Concerts will continue to provide a joyous way for many in Dayton to get to know the varied traditions of their global neighbors.
