About the Student Symposium

The afternoon student symposium is geared towards undergraduate students interested in a career in healthcare. This year’s student symposium will have two afternoon sessions. Within each session, students will have their choice from three discussion panels to attend.

2018 Student Symposium Sessions

1:30 – 2:20 p.m.
  • Life in physician assistant school: This panel will include current physician assistant students who will discuss their experiences and how one year differs from the next.  This panel will also include Dr. Jared Pennington, Chair of the Physician Assistant Department at Baldwin Wallace University.
  • Life in dental school: This panel will include current dental students who will discuss their experiences and how one year differs from the next.
  • Life in medical school: This panel will include current medical students who will discuss their experiences and how one year differs from the next.
  • Naloxone training and distribution: PROJECT DAWN (DEATHS AVOIDED BY NALOXONE) is a community-based overdose education and naloxone distribution program, sponsored by the Ohio Dept. of Health. Naloxone is a medication that can reverse an overdose caused by an opioid drug. Communities are arming citizens with these kits in an effort to provide an accessible way for citizens to save the life of someone experiencing an overdose. Project DAWN participants receive training on:
    - Recognizing the signs and symptoms of overdose
    - Distinguishing between different types of overdose
    - Performing rescue breathing
    - Calling emergency medical services
    - Administering intranasal Naloxone
2:30 pm – 3:20 p.m.
  • Gap year experiences: This panel will include members who have taken time between undergraduate and graduate school. Panelists will discuss their experiences and how students can plan for a gap year.
  • Building up your interview skills: This presentation by University of Dayton Career Services will discuss strategies to prepare for successful health professional school interviews.
  • Careers in healthcare: This panel will include members who have completed graduate-level training in various healthcare career fields such as speech pathology, audiology, dietetics and nursing.
