1World Celebration 2014

Friday, April 25, 2014

7-11 p.m. at ArtStreet

The public is invited to a free celebration in April at the University of Dayton featuring the music, food, visual arts and activism that make the city of Dayton one-of-a-kind. This is a culminating celebration of ArtStreet's evolving vision of ‘radically creative arts experiences that change the world’ that look to celebrate the diversity and creativity of both the City of Dayton and the University of Dayton through philanthropy, food, art, music and performance.

Musical performances will include an inspired concert lineup that looks back at the history of Dayton’s music voices and influences on two outdoor stages, headlined by the city’s very own MOTEL BEDS and including AL HOLBROOK, JAYNE SACHS, ORANGE WILLARD and OH CONDOR. Also included is the annual THURSDAY NIGHT LIVE album release party, showcasing the future sounds of Dayton with performances by campus favorites on the ArtStreet Café Stage throughout the entire night.

"Over the past year, ArtStreet, the South Student Neighborhood and so many residents of Dayton have collaborated and shared arts and cultural experiences that have truly brought perspectives together,” said Brian LaDuca, director of ArtStreet. "We want to celebrate the fact that UD is an urban campus with a shared creative history with Dayton. The best way to do that is by ‘breaking bread’ and relishing the rich, artistic past that continues to influence the future."

A RAGE FOR RIGHTS car smash will kick start the evening: attendees will have the opportunity to raise money for Be Free Dayton by smashing a car covered in local street art themed around some of America’s most devastating human rights issues. The evening will continue with real-time art creations around ArtStreet’s 2013-14 RIGHT HERE | RIGHT NOW themes of street art and city influence, gun violence in today’s youth, empathy and art, and media and the right to feel beautiful.

The original VOICES: America’s Music exhibition will be open all evening in the ArtStreet Studio D Gallery, produced by the 2013-14 ArtStreet family of residents and featuring an immersive look at the past 110 years of American music and the history behind those disenfranchised and marginalized voices that shaped the sounds we know today.

Reintroducing topics from ‘experiences’ held throughout the semester, other activities include an interactive area featuring work from CONSCIOUSNESS RISING.

A city-to-campus celebration like 1World would not be complete with the tastes of the city’s fantastic food truck community: HARVEST MOBILE CUISINE and VOODOO TACO will be on the complex grounds creating 1World-specific cuisine for the entire evening.

1World Celebration is presented in partnership with the University Libraries’ "AMERICA'S MUSIC" series. "America’s Music" is a project by the Tribeca Film Institute in collaboration with the American Library Association, Tribeca Flashpoint and the Society for American Music, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor. 1World is also presented with support from the UD Criminal Justice Studies Program, as well as student leadership from various organizations and academic courses, including Sports Management.

The event is free and open to the public. ArtStreet is located at the intersection of Lawnview Avenue and Kiefaber Street on the University of Dayton campus. Public parking is available in C lot, at the intersection of Kiefaber and Evanston Streets; no permit is needed after 4:30 p.m. In the event of rain, the event will be held in the McGinnis Center, which is adjacent to the ArtStreet complex.
