Drs. Partha Banerjee and Mikhail Vorontsov attend OSA Incubator

Dr. Banerjee's blog post reveals that "According to the United Nations Environment Program, more than 1 billion people are exposed to outdoor air pollution annually. Urban air pollution is linked to up to 1 million premature deaths and 1 million pre-native deaths each year. Urban air pollution is estimated to cost approximately 2% of GDP in developed countries and 5% in developing countries. By organizing this Incubator on Precision Measurements in Air Quality & Turbulence, the leadership of the Environmental Sensing Technical Group hope to open the door to innovative and aggressive monitoring of air quality and predictions, leading to worldwide improvement of the quality of life."

Dr. Partha Banerjee and Dr. Mikhail Vorontsov, University of Dayton, Department of Electro-Optics and Photonics, have just returned from The Optical Society (OSA) Incubator, Precision Measurements in Air Quality & Turbulence: From Space-based Observations to Networked, Ground-based Point Sensors, held in Washington, D.C. Sponsored by, the University of Dayton, NASA and Aerodyne Research, Inc., participants focused on optical sensors and sensor technologies appropriate for precision measurements of air quality at spatial and temporal scales — from rooms and buildings to the global atmosphere. Click here to read Dr. Banerjee's blog about the 3-day event.

OSA, founded in 1916, is dedicated to studying and advancing the science of light, specifically optics and photonics. Most recently, the OSA introduced a new form of integrative meetings called Incubators. Their Incubators provide unique and focused experiences for researchers, engineers and business leaders to meet and discuss research advances, challenges and opportunities.
