Reed Kaiser to join Ethicon

This month’s Cooperative Education spotlight is on mechanical engineering major, Reed Kaiser. Graduating this May, Kaiser has been asked to join Ethicon's Engineering Development Program.

Early at the University of Dayton School of Engineering, Kaiser committed to the experiential learning programs offered by the School's Cooperative Education program and The ETHOS Center.

Cooperative Education enabled Kaiser to co-op for four work terms at Ethicon Endo-Surgery (a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary) beginning in the spring of 2014, which helped him to discover his engineering path. During Kaiser’s first three Ethicon rotations, he worked with three different research and development departments as a quality engineer. When he returned for his fourth and final rotation, Kaiser worked as a design engineer co-op and was named Co-op Coordinator, a prestigious title given to one of the 40+ co-op students at Ethicon. Through his work-term rotations, Kaiser gained valuable engineering experiences as well as beneficial skills in people management, technical writing and presentations.

The ETHOS Center presented Kaiser with international experiences in not only experiential learning but also in service learning during an engineering immersion trip to Malawi (summer 2016). The ETHOS Center provides domestic and international service-learning opportunities through their technical immersions. In Malawi, Kaiser gained perspectives on how engineering and technology are influenced by the world. He used his engineering skills to help impact the future of education in the Malawi region.

We are proud to announce that Kaiser was offered a full-time position with Ethicon upon his May 2017 graduation. In his final co-op report, Kaiser writes: “The completion of four co-op terms undeniably helped me to obtain and build the relationships and skills needed to be a potential candidate for Ethicon’s Engineering Development Program.”
