The Office of Experiential Learning Takes On The Midwest Digital Marketing Conference

By Christopher Miller

The Office of Experiential Learning (OEL) had an exciting trip to the Midwest Marketing Digital Conference (MDMC) in St. Louis. MDMC was rated a top marketing conference to check out in 2019 by Forbes. In 2018 an attendance record was set with nearly 2,000 marketers. The conference included 80 sessions in several field tracks: data, digital, social media, creative, E-commerce, innovation, academic, tech and entrepreneurship.

Our team learned about the do’s and don’t of marketing from speakers representing Google, LinkedIn, GoDaddy, Adobe and many more incredible businesses. “Becoming a Renaissance Marketer with Agile Marketing,” “All play and No Work: The Role of Recreation in Marketing,” and “The Sonic Revolution is Here. Now What?” are titles of a few of the presentations we attended.

Student workers Sophia Williamson, Colleen Kelch and Chris Miller attended and won a social media simulation competition. We tested promotional strategies, created social media ads, analyzed content, managed a social media marketing budget and scheduled posts as a fictional lifestyle bag company. We did this using an academic program called MIMIC Social Simulations created by Stukent, Inc.

Stukent provides digital courseware for high schools and higher education while fulfilling its mission to help educators help students help the world. Stukent courseware includes first-in-the world simulations, continuously updated digital textbooks and expert mentoring sessions by industry professionals.

Our team had a blast participating in the competition and learning a lot along the way. Check out our Facebook page to see us get interviewed by the VP of Marketing at Stukent Trevor Erikson. Trevor served as the competition’s host.
