From the Marian Treasure Chest

Brother John Samaha sent us a short poem from Brother Joe Barrish with the following comment: "Here's my tribute to Saint Joseph, the Worker."

Saint Joseph, the Worker by Brother Joe Barrish, S.M.

I never think of Joseph

--As some artists seem to do--

With peach and cream complexion

And eyes of baby blue.

For Joseph was a real man

And certainly you would find

Far more than cutesy ringlets

On his God-directed mind.

Joseph carried more than lilies

He worked with saw and wood

He plied his trade with honor

And earned his livelihood.

So I salute you Joseph

The only of our race

Whom God called "Abba! Daddy!"

When Jesus saw your face.

Regina Coeli Address: Prayers for Venezuela and for all Countries in Difficulty (Zenit) April 30, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning!

Tragic news does not cease to arrive about the situation in Venezuela and the worsening of the clashes, with numerous dead, wounded and arrested. While I unite myself to the grief of the families of the victims, for whom I assure prayers of suffrage, I address a heartfelt appeal to the Government and to all the components of the Venezuelan society to avoid all further forms of violence; may human rights be respected and may negotiated solutions be sought to the grave humanitarian, social, political, and economic crisis that is distressing the population. We entrust to the Most Holy Virgin Mary the intention of peace, of reconciliation and of democracy in that dear country. And we pray for all countries that are going through grave difficulties, I am thinking in particular these days of the Republic of Macedonia....

Bringing Out Treasures Old and New (SEEN) XVI:2, 2016

The Marian Library at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, has been blessed with a priest who is passionate about collecting art specifically devoted to the Virgin Mary. Beginning with a single, donated nativity set displayed on a reading room bookshelf in the early 1990's, Marianist Father Johann Roten has assembled a collection of more than 3,000 creches--reflecting Christmas traditions from Alaska to Zambia--from over 100 countries. On permanent display or in seasonal exhibitions, visitors encounter hand-beaded South African manger scenes, Oaxacan ceramic nativity sets, Greek and Ukrainian icons, and the twelve-foot-long multi-figured Mirror of Hope diorama by Connecticut sculptor Kevin Hanna--especially commissioned to commemorate the new millennium--which depicts the story of salvation from the Garden of Eden to the City of God.

With help from volunteers who work for several hours on Tuesdays, The Marian Library is able to keep the collection in good order and assemble from twenty to thirty new nativity scenes each year. Some 650 creches will take to the road during the 2016 holiday season, on loan to Notre Dame University in Indiana; the Mount Saint John Marianist retreat center outside Dayton, Ohio; and a dozen churches, schools, and libraries across the state. The Christmas displays have even ventured into "secular" territory. The Dayton Art Institute held a year-end show in 2010, with a diverse selection of creches from the Library, whimsically titled, Will They Ever Get to the Manger?
