The article below was sent by Brother John Samaha with the following text: "September 12 is the feast of the Holy Name of Mary. Holy Mother of God and Our Mother, pray for us."

The Holy Name of Mary by Brother John Samaha, S.M.

What's in a name?

Mary was a common name among the Hebrews because it recalled the memory of Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron.  For this reason some scholars think this name is related to an old Egyptian word meaning beloved. This understanding certainly fits Mary of Nazareth. She was so beloved by God that she was always in the right relationship with Him. Out of love, God chose her to be the mother of Jesus. Love is about the whole person, the entirety of her being, one whose very name is beautiful.

Every September 12 we honor the Holy Name of Mary in our liturgical calendar. St. Bonaventure prayed, "Your name, Mary, cannot be spoken devoutly without bringing with it some grace." We honor Mary's name because it is a sacrament of the person. To know Mary's name is to know her. To speak her name with reverence is to be familiar with her who was most familiar with God. In some Asian countries she is known by names that mean one who hears our cries.

May we always honor the name of Jesus' mother and our spiritual mother. When in need, call on Mary.

Brazil: Mary is a Sign of Hope for Young People (Zenit website) August 1, 2017

Pope Francis encouraged young people to look to Mary as a model, but also to take action in their communities. They must not be afraid to take risks and to commit to the building of a new society, bringing the Gospel to the social, political, economic and university realms.

The Holy Father’s comments came in early July in a letter--released today, August 1, 2017, in Portuguese--to young people of Brazil, gathered in Aparecida for the closing of the "Rota 300" Project, in the Marian Year that commemorates the 300 years of the finding of Our Lady's image in the waters of Rio Paraiba do Sul (July 29-30 2017).

"The Virgin Mary is a beautiful example for youth and a help in the walk on the way of life. Great reflections are not necessary for you to perceive this truth," Pope Francis said, recalling his past visits to Aparecida. "I was able to discover there the tender and maternal look of the dark Virgin and in the eyes of the simple people that contemplated her, the secret of hope that moves the Brazilian people, to face with faith and courage the challenges of each day." ...

The apparition of Our Lady in Fatima on September 13, 1917, held surprises for more than 20,000 people who flocked to the Cova da Iria. There were heavenly phenomena that were like a tiny preview of what was coming on October 13. Let's start at the beginning.

Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco--now Servant of God Lucia and Sts. Jacinta and Francisco--had difficulty reaching the holmoak tree where Our Lady would appear to them around noon. In her Memoirs, Lucia explained, "The roads were packed with people, and everyone wanted to see us and speak to us." ...
