#YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship takes Commitment to the Next Level

“You are welcome here” is more than just a catchy phrase at the University of Dayton (UD).  In the fall, UD became one of 57 universities across the country to make a commitment to welcoming international students to campus in a new way. With over 5,300 colleges and universities in the U.S., this kind of commitment is significant in making UD stand out among the many options for international students.

What started as a social media campaign, first by Temple University, #YouAreWelcomeHere quickly became a conversation on how to do more to support international students. Taking it a step further, Temple University again decided to respond to the apprehension by some international students about studying in the U.S. by offering funding in a significant way. The scholarship provides financial resources to students who otherwise might not consider the opportunity to study full time in this country.

So how does the scholarship work? Interested students must apply and be accepted to the university as a first year, undergraduate student. They must also submit an application, either written or video recorded, which demonstrates their interest and commitment to intercultural learning and exchange. A criteria for distributing the award was established by a board of members from the different participating universities, and UD will utilize the same criteria in the review process. Beginning in the fall 2109 semester, recipients of the award will be among the first cohort of students representing this opportunity.

“[This scholarship] shows our commitment to take it further” shared Christine DeLisio Kremer, Director for International and Graduate Admission. “We want this opportunity to be connected to intercultural learning, and we’ve already started to get interest. This scholarship is a part of our Marianist mission. It’s a part of being inclusive, and ultimately is serving the common good.”

UD is one of four universities in Ohio to commit to this scholarship, leading the way for others. To learn more about the scholarship and application, visit the website.
