Congratulations to the 2018 Library Award Winners

By Katy Kelly

The Dr. Nicoletta Hary Award* provides a scholarship to returning full-time or part-time sophomore or junior students with a major or minor in teacher education. Award criteria include financial need, a good academic record, and personal characteristics reflecting the Marianist tradition. This year the committee selected three winners:

  • Kayla Flaute is a sophomore early childhood education major working toward a fourth-and-fifth-grade endorsement and the STEM certificate. She’s also learning American Sign Language in order to communicate with children with hearing loss.
  • Samantha Mack is a sophomore majoring in early childhood education, working toward certificates in dyslexia and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
  • Danielle Villhard is a sophomore with majors in early childhood education and the early childhood intervention specialist program; she also has a minor in visual arts.

The Rev. Theodore Koehler, S.M., International Student Award provides a scholarship to any returning international student with a non-immigrant visa. Award criteria include financial need, a good academic record, and personal characteristics that reflect the Marianist tradition. Three students received the honor:

  • Julia Karlsson of Sweden is in her second year as a double major in premedicine and psychology. She is the first and only international student in PAVE, Peers Advocating for Violence Education. Her involvement with PAVE cemented her decision to pursue a career in psychiatry or biopsychology.
  • Prateek Sharma of India  is a graduate student in in transdisciplinary early childhood education and has volunteered and been a substitute teacher at the Bombeck Family Learning Center. Committed to serving the poor and marginalized, he plans to bring a new level of educational care to students around the world.
  • Lin Xin Li is a third year student from China double-majoring in Psychology, and Theatre, Dance and Performance Technology with a concentration in dance. Her application spoke of her commitment to making friends across cultural and language barriers and helping others to do the same, exemplifying the Marianist value of building community.

The Brother Frank Ruhlman, S.M., Award of Excellence for Literary Achievement provides a scholarship to a UD undergraduate who demonstrates excellence in writing published in University publications during the current academic year. For the first time in the award’s history, the library is presenting an honorable mention in addition to the award:

  • The 2018 Ruhlman Award winner is sophomore communication major Emma Kapp, who not only demonstrated compelling investigative journalism, but also conveyed human interest across a variety of genres.
  • Junior English major Will Landers received an honorable mention for his social justice-focused writing and his proficiency at sustaining complex academic arguments.

The Library Awards Committees and the faculty and staff in the University Libraries congratulate the honorees and thank all the applicants for their inspiring submissions.

*This award was previously known as the Klick Award.
