4-Year Review Matters

The Common Academic Program (CAP) is the common learning experience all of our undergraduate students share. Unlike many other static approaches to general education, CAP strives to be different and ensure that there is a continual focus on student learning. The 4-Year Review process is one way to maintain that focus.  


Four years after a course is approved for inclusion in CAP, departments and faculty members participate in the 4-Year Review process. This is an opportunity to evaluate past student learning, as well as establish goals for learning in the future. The CAP Committee (CAPC) works with departments and faculty to examine the processes for ensuring student learning in their courses.


Knowing that the 4-Year Review process can seem daunting, the CAP Office organizes various events to assist faculty members and departments, including a workshop that was held on September 14th. The event was a success with 28 participants from 19 departments and programs learning about the process directly from those who had been through it. Wiebke Diestelkamp (Mathematics), Lee Dixon (Psychology), and Steve Wilhoit (English) used their experience to illuminate the true meaning and value of the 4-Year Review and answer questions from those new to the process. Their first-hand testimonies were a positive reminder that CAP is about building and fostering a community of learning.
