Graduation Pledge

By Nick Cardilino

What are we really doing here? Why does the University of Dayton exist? How are UD grads different from those who graduate from other colleges and universities?

I was recently talking with a 2016 grad who is finishing up a year of full-time service and is discerning what to do next. The 3 options he narrowed it down to were all focused on work that would make a part of the world better, more just place. He was basing his vocational discernment on how best to build the faith community to make that happen. The way he articulated this was a beautiful example of UD’s mission coming into bloom.

Dr. Spina has recently shared a bold vision for us as the University for the  Common Good, a concept rooted in our identity as a Catholic and Marianist university. This vision is not just for staff and faculty; it’s not just for current students. Alumni have a huge role to play in this as well.

For those about to graduate, we invite you to take this pledge: “In accordance with the University of Dayton’s tradition to learn, lead, and serve, I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organization for which I work.” You can sign it officially here, and you will receive a magnet and business card to remind you of this commitment and make you proud to be a UD grad!
