Ohio's Symphony of Seasons

Dayton, Ohio is known for it’s unusual weather variations. Just yesterday the students of the University of Dayton (UD) were walking around in shorts and a t-shirt in 70-degree weather and this morning they woke up to snow. Although UD students have become accustomed to these up and down weather changes, “temperatures that warm this early in February is quite rare,” states Eric Elwell from the Dayton Daily News.

When my roommate and I first came to Ohio in fall of 2014, we did not understand what people meant when they would tell us to be prepared for the temperature or weather conditions to change instantly! “It doesn’t take long to realize you’ll always need an umbrella and winter coat within arms’ reach even on the sunniest days,” states Spencer McKee a travel/real estate writer for Movoto. After being students at the University of Dayton for three years now, my roommate and I finally understand what it means to be prepared for Ohio weather.

So what does it mean to be prepared for Ohio weather? For my roommate and I our closet have become filled with every type of shirt, pant, sweater, tank top, jacket, wind breaker, raincoat, vest, sock, flip flop, heels, rain boot, snow boot, and anything else you could think of for every type of weather condition. Now this is not uncommon for people to have many of these types of things in their closets, however, the difference between Ohio and most everywhere else is you don’t pack away your winter clothes for summer, or only bring out your snow boots for winter. No, you keep it all out and accessible for anytime; any day, any season!

You will want to be able to run home after class and change those flip flops for a pair of winter boots in order to make it through the rest of the day as fast as possible. You just never know what the weather will be or how fast it will change.

Ohio is known for having four seasons, however like April Dray states, “we experience a symphony of seasons here – occasionally all in the very same week.” With this symphony of seasons, Ohio keeps UD students on our toes. For me this is not a frustrating experience, it did however take a little bit of getting used to as I am from Jackson Hole, Wyoming and upstate New York where our seasons are more definite. The constant weather change is fun in my opinion. It keeps seasonal depression at bay and makes my closet look bigger.

So if you’re on your way to Ohio make sure to ignore the advice to pack light and pack everything! You won’t regret the extra, but you will regret not having the clothing you need.
