Time for Basketball Season12.01.2010
ItÂs hard to believe that the official basketball season has started. After playing pretty good in two exhibition games, we started the season tonight playing Mount St. MaryÂs. If you did not know, I am a cheerleader for the University of Dayton so basketball season is pretty exciting for me. After getting to travel for the NIT last year and winning the NIT, there is much excitement and high hopes for the menÂs basketball team. My favorite part of the game is the very beginning where they play some music right before the team runs out of the tunnel. The cheerleaders tumble out, and I run the BIG ÂUDÂ flag. The 13,500 fans that are crammed into the arena go crazy. The national anthem is played, the starting five for each team are announced, and then the game begins.
After a slow start to the game and with the lead changing many times between the MountaineerÂs and our Dayton Flyers, the second half we pulled away for a 67-52 win in our home opener. As for being on the sidelines, we get the opportunity to see the game up close and personal while leading the crowd in different cheers to help get the team pumped up.
For a lot of the new people on the squad, it was the first time with thousands of people with their eyes on us. For some, it made them a little nervous, but I think they will get used to it and adapt to the atmosphere pretty quickly. The atmosphere of the Dayton arena is pretty amazing. We have some of the best fans in the country and the city of Dayton seems to revolve around the nights that the Flyers have a basketball game. If people cannot get to the game, you can bet that restaurants and bars will be packed with the Flyer Faithful to watch and support the menÂs basketball team. With a win to start the season, spirits are high here in Dayton. The excitement continues to grow for the anticipation of the next basketball game.
After a great night of basketball, it is time for me to get some schoolwork done. The light at the end of the tunnel is Thanksgiving break, which is just a few short weeks away. I canÂt wait, and therefore IÂm pushing myself to just make it to break.
Be safe and make good choices!
