My First UD Men's Game

This past Sunday I attended my first Flyers men's basketball game. I know...that's absurd. A student in his third year at the University of Dayton, who loves sports, hasn't seen the Flyers battle in UD Arena until this week. In my defense I have a plethora of (lame) excuses: I never know when to purchase the season pass, I don't have a car, my friends rarely went so I wasn't inclined to ask them to buy tickets with me so that we all could go, etc.

Nevertheless, I offered to cover the men's game against Saint Louis University for Flyer News, UD's own student run newspaper. With that came a few perks. For one, I was allowed free admittance and access to the media room. Here I was able to converse with professional journalists, gain insight on the dos and don'ts of the field, and of course, free food. Seriously, there was so much free food. Pizza, chips, and every soda on the planet -- it was amazing.

Besides the food and networking, I also got to watch the game with courtside seats. It's much easier to analyze and feel the intensity of the arena when you're on the floor. Aside from a journalism standpoint, the seats were just awesome. There are so many things you can miss from sitting high up in the bleachers: the joking between opponents, the conversations between referees and players after a foul, the communication between teammates.

I plan to cover more games at the arena and I'm thankful I can do what I love at my university, especially with our fans in UD Arena.
