Mac Monday: Calculator Modes

calculatorThe Calculator app included in OS X is more robust than what appears on the surface.  The app includes two modes, a full feature scientific calculator and a programmer calculator.  To switch between these modes, follow the instructions below:

  • Open the Calculator app from /Applications/, Spotlight, or Launchpad
  • Pull down the "View" menu and select either "Scientific" or "Programmer."

The scientific calculator works with scientific notation, logarithmic, exponential, constants, exponents, fractions, roots, and all else you'd expect, while the programmer calculator supports hexadecimal, decimal, binary, ascii, and unicode. The image to the left shows a screenshot from the programmer calculator interface.

There are also shortcuts for switching modes from within the Calculator app:

  • Press Command + 1 for Regular Calculator
  • Press Command + 2 for Scientific Calculator
  • Press Command + 3 for Programmer Calculator

And if you're on your iPhone and suddenly need more scientific functions, tilt it sideways to access the full featured scientific calculator.
