Media Monday: Virtual Reality

BirdlyVirtual reality technology was highlighted this past week at the Sundance Film Festival. Max Rheiner, the creator of Birdly, debuted a full-body virtual reality experience that gives the user the feeling of flying as a bird from a first-person perspective. Using an Oculus Rift headset and a fan, Sundance attendees were able to have the experience of flying over San Francisco. The city was mapped using computer-generated 3D data and includes no live film. Flying is not like watching a pre-programmed movie, but rather like an interactive game - you can gain altitude by flapping your "wings," and change direction by rotating your body.
