This is a three stage competition:

Stage 1 - Shark Tank Style Elevator Pitch
Stage 2 - New Venture Creation Cameo Round
Stage 3 - New Venture Creation Final Round

STAGE 1 - SHARK TANK STYLE ROUND
One minute, one slide... $1,500!

During the Fall 2017 term, entry applications must be submitted no later than Friday, September 29, 2017, at 5:00pm for the Shark Tank Round in Dayton, Ohio.  Entry applications for the Shark Tank Round in Suzhou, China, will be accepted beginning September 1, 2017 and ending October 13, 2017.  Entry applications for the Shark Tank Round in Ho Chi Minh City is now open with an application deadline of October 13, 2017.  A panel of qualified judges will review submitted applications and select 50 applicants from each city to advance to the New Venture Creation Round.

For the Dayton, Ohio, Shark Tank Style Round, entrants will pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges on Saturday, October 21, 2017, in Miriam Hall, Room 119 (O'Leary Auditorium).  In Dayton, pitches last a maximum of one minute, and entrants are limited to ONE PowerPoint slide that must be submitted to the competition coordinator (Connie Neace, cneace1@udayton.edu) via email no later than Monday, October 16, 2017, at 5:00pm. Slides must be saved as a JPEG file (.jpg) prior to emailing it to the competition director.  Only one person from an entry needs to be present at the Shark Tank Style Round stage of the competition.

For the Suzhou, China, New Venture Creation Round, entrants will pitch their ideas to a panel on Saturday, November 4, 2017.  Pitches last a maximum of 90 seconds, and entrants are limited to ONE PowerPoint slide that must be submitted to the competition coordinator (Connie Neace, cneace1@udayton.edu) via email no later than Friday, October 13, 2017, at 5:00pm. Slides must be saved as a JPEG file (.jpg) prior to emailing it to the competition director.  Only one person from an entry needs to be present at the Elevator Pitch stage of the competition.

Shark Tank Style presenters may NOT…

  • Bring additional slides
  • Use equipment or computers other than what is provided by the Competition
  • Set up additional props or materials
  • Present their pitches virtually (e.g., no Skype, YouTube, video recordings, etc.). Participants must be physically present at the competition in order to present their pitch.

For the Dayton, Ohio, Shark Tank Style Round, the ten best elevator pitches will win the following prize monies:

  • 1st place:   $1,500
  • 2nd place:  $1,000
  • 3rd place:   $500
  • 4th place:   $500
  • 5th-10th place: $250 each

We will also award a $2,500 cash prize to the highest scoring Green Technology pitch and the highest scoring Social Enterprise pitch.

For the Suzhou, China, New Venture Creation Cameo Round, the top scoring pitch will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Dayton, Ohio, to compete in the New Venture Creation Final Round on March 27, 2018, for a minimum $5,000 cash prize

STAGE 2 – NEW VENTURE CREATION ROUND
Five minutes, five slides... $1,000

After the Dayton, Ohio, Shark Tank Style Round stage concludes, the panel of judges will select 10 entries for advancement to the New Venture Creation Cameo Round, to be held Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 10:00am (tentative time).  All entries presented in the New Venture Creation Cameo Round are guaranteed a $1,000 award, provided entrants adhere to all New Venture Creation Cameo Round team expectations as described in the rules. 

The 10 entrants advancing to the New Venture Creation Cameo Round must submit a 5-page write up about their business, and participants must present up to a 5-minute presentation about their business to the New Venture Creation Cameo Round judges on Saturday, November 18, 2017. In addition to the 5-minute presentation, New Venture Creation Cameo Round judges are allowed up to five minutes to ask questions of participants following their presentation. At the 5-minute presentation, New Venture Creation Cameo Round participants are allowed a maximum of five PowerPoint slides, and they may use props as appropriate.  The five-page write up and five PowerPoint slides must be submitted to the competition coordinator (Connie Neace, cneace1@udayton.edu) via email no later than Friday , November 10, 2017, at 5:00pm.  The 5-page write-up must be submitted as a MS Word document, and the presentation slides must be in a MS PowerPoint format.  Files submitted must be able to operate on a PC running MS Windows.  No other file formats, operating systems, etc. are permitted in the competition.  In addition, participants may not use their own computers, etc. to project their PowerPoint slides or other materials during their presentation.

During the New Venture Creation Cameo Round presentation, teams may choose to have just a single presenter, or they may have the entire team present. Unlike with the Shark Tank Style Elevator Pitch, we assume an equal split of prize monies among all team members, unless there is a written agreement (signed by all team members) stating otherwise.  Each member will get no less than 10% of the prize winnings.  After the New Venture Creation Cameo Round, the judges will select five finalists (as well as up to two alternates) to advance to the New Venture Creation Final stage of the competition.

STAGE 3 – NEW VENTURE CREATION FINAL ROUND
First prize:  $25,000

Once named, the seven finalist teams (five from Dayton, one from Suzhou and one from Ho Chi Minh City) will be guaranteed a minimum of $5,000, if the team adheres to all finalist team expectations as described in the rules -- including the completion of status reports, business plan submissions, PowerPoint slide submissions, and presentations delivered by the respective due dates (see www.udbpc.com).  The New Venture Creation Final Round is tentatively scheduled to occur on Saturday, March 24, 2018.  Teams can use as many slides as they want--but they only have 20 minutes to present their business plan to the New Venture Creation Final Round judges.  After the 20 minutes are up, judges may ask questions.  The business plan and any status reports must be submitted as a MS Word document, and the presentation slides must be in a MS PowerPoint format.  Files submitted must be able to operate on a PC running MS Windows.  No other file formats, operating systems, etc. are permitted in the competition.  In addition, participants may not use their own computers, etc. to project their PowerPoint slides or other materials during their presentation.  

For U.S. teams, all team members are expected to be present for the New Venture Creation Final Round, although not all are required to speak during the presentation. Only two members are needed from the Suzhou Round.  Each team at the New Venture Creation Final Round stage must include either a current UD student (undergraduate or graduate) or alumni of UD. Each team member is guaranteed a minimum of 10% of the winning prize package for their team.  We assume an equal split among all team members, unless there is a written agreement (signed by all team members) stating otherwise. 

The finalist teams will win the following prize monies based on the New Venture Creation Final Round judges’ final rankings:

  • 1st place:  $25,000
  • 2nd place: $15,000
  • 3rd place:  $10,000
  • 4th place:  $5,000
  • 5th place:  $5,000
  • 6th place:  $5,000

In addition to the prize money outlined above, all finalist teams and alternate teams will win ten hours of free legal advice and support via the UD Law School's Entrepreneurship and IP Clinic (executable between January 2018 and the start of finals week in May 2018).

The top three finalist winners will also win 15 additional hours of free legal advice and support via the UD Law School's Entrepreneurship and IP Clinic (executable between the start of the fall session in August 2018 and the start of finals week in the Fall 2018 term).
