Sustainability Week: Greeks Go Green

Add to Calendar 10/19/2015 11:00:0010/21/2015 14:00:0015Sustainability Week: Greeks Go GreenThe idea of Greeks go Green is to promote more eco-friendly habits within the University of Dayton. Because Greek Life makes up a large percent of the student body, a greener Greek Life will help to make a greener UD. This event would be a great opportunity for Greek Life, as sustainability is becoming a huge cause at UD with the new $12.5 million Hanley Sustainability Institute, and because sustainability is a social cause that plagues everyone around the world. Implementing greener habits in college students now will help our generation to become more sustainable in the years to come. Greeks go Green consists of three components and the chapter that accumulates the most points between these components will be awarded with a trophy and will be named the most Sustainable Greek Organization- 2015.  The three components are as follows: 1) The first component of Greeks go Green will take place Monday, October 19 through Wednesday, October 21 from11am-2pm outside of KU. This component of Greeks go Green will consist of 6 Green Programs: a) Promoting reusable shopping bags and totes (will take place on Monday, October 19) b) Promoting the use of reusable water bottles instead of plastic (will take place on Monday, October 19) c) Proper recycling habits (will take place on Tuesday, October 20) d) Proper composting habits (will take place on Tuesday, October 20) e) Reducing energy consumption (will take place on Wednesday, October 21) f) Nature and outdoor activities in and around Dayton (will take place on Wednesday, October 21) 2) The second component is a Sheet Sign Contest- the chapter will need to create a sheet sign that promotes Greeks go Green and Sustainability Week. The signs must say Greeks go Green Sustainability Week 2015, but be creative! Signs must be up before 6pm on Friday, October 16th and you must text a picture of your sign to Charlotte or Emily so that we can post it on the UD Sustainability Instagram. The student body will be voting on the best sign. The sign that has the most likes on the UD Sustainability Instagram will win this component. Each chapter is encouraged to display their sheet sign on all forms of social media, and to encourage their chapter and friends to like the picture of their sign on the UDSustainability Instagram. 3) The third component is a reduction in energy usage- energy bills for all of the participating chapters’ houses for the month of September will be collected through UD Facilities. During the month of October, the chapters will try to reduce their energy consumption. At the end of October, energy bills will be collected again. The chapter members living in the house with the largest percent decline in energy usage will win this component. However, bonus points will be given to chapters that can arrange other ways to reduce energy consumption outside of their chapter house and include other members in their chapter. An example would be for a chapter to promote walking and biking to chapter or to brown street instead of driving. Another would be to share the energy reduction ideas being used in the house to other chapter members living in dorms and apartments. Use instagram, facebook, and twitter to show these energy consumption reduction ideas (get creative!) and #UDSustainability on Instagram, tweet @UDSustain_Club, or tag us on Facebook UD Sustainability Club, so that we can accurately award you chapter with bonus points. We will educate each participating house of ways that they can save energy and we will be posting tips on how to be more energy efficient on twitter throughout the month of October (so be sure to follow us @UDSustain_Club)!KU PlazaCenter for Student Involvementstudentorgs@udayton.eduNo10/19/2015
