ARTSLIVE Presents: JOAN SORIANO: The Duke of Bachata

Tuesday, October 10

Time: 7 p.m. — 9 p.m.

Location: Kennedy Union Boll Theater

Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Joan Soriano fashioned his first guitar from a tin can and fishing line—and never looked back. First forming a band with some of his 14 siblings, Soriano now tours internationally. The popularity of Soriano’s steel guitar-based rhythmic folk music, known as bachata, is growing in leaps and bounds. Essential to Dominican culture and eminently danceable, bachata (which initially meant simply “backyard party”) draws upon a variety of influences from Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. In Soriano’s hands, it is a sometime soulful, sometimes celebratory dive into the rhythms of his homeland.
