Dayton Jazz Ensemble
08:00 PM - 09:30 PM
Location: Boll Theatre, Kennedy Union
Cost: Free

The UD Music Department presents Swinging in the Season with the UD Jazz Ensemble on Thursday night at 8 p.m. in the Boll Theater. The cornerstone of the concert will be the Dayton premiere of Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto, featuring UD clarinet professor Wallis Vore. The only work for jazz ensemble by Igor Stravinsky, Ebony Concerto was commissioned by clarinetist/bandleader Woody Herman and premiered in 1946. This arrangement by director Jimmy Leach is based on the published score as well as Professor Leach’s research of Stravinksy’s sketches and fair copy in the Sacher Stiftung in Basel, Switzerland.

Also on the concert: Take the A Train by Dayton's own Billy Strayhorn whose 102nd birthday was last week. Following A Train will be Jack the Bear, a Duke Ellington composition. Both works feature UD jazz bass professor Christian Berg.

Two works by Wynton Marsalis will be on the show: Jump, a composition from the ballet Jump Start, commissioned by the New York City Ballet, and The Caboose, from the Big Train album.

Lovers of the Swing era will enjoy Tommy Dorsey's theme song, I'm Getting Sentimental Over You, featuring trombonist Connor Fuhrmann ‘18.

Gigi Klotz ‘19 will sing seasonal favorites: Let it Snow, The Man with the Bag, and What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? The program will conclude with a duet sung by Gigi and her sister Bella Klotz ‘20 on White Christmas.

Admission and programs are free, but seats are limited. Plenty of free parking in Lot C.
