The 2018 AKD/Saxton Address, entitled “Being in the Right Place at the Right Time: Substance Use Interventions in Criminal Justice Settings,” is presented by Michele Staton, Ph.D. Staton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavioral Science at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and is a Faculty Associate in the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research. She is an accomplished researcher with a focus on screening and brief intervention for substance use in non-traditional venues. Her recent work includes:

  • Drug abuse, risky sexual behavior, and HIV/HVC among rural women in the Appalachian area of eastern Kentucky
  • Brief intervention via telemedicine with rural offenders on community supervision
  • Design, implementation and testing of interventions for juveniles focused on substance use and HIV
Dr. Staton has published in the area of women and substance abuse, prison-based treatment, health service use among incarcerated women, and employment among drug offenders.
