The 50th Anniversary of the Assassination of Dr. King

The University of Dayton will honor Dr. Martin Luther King on this, the anniversary of his death, through the following campus and community activities:

Prayer Gathering

12 noon: Campus Ministry will sponsor a prayer gathering at the campus Martin Luther King memorial that stands on the lawn below the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception.

Memorial Mass

12:30 p.m.: The Monthly Memorial Mass will be held in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at which Dr. King will be remembered among others remembered at that mass.

Citywide tolling of bells

7:05 p.m.: Accepting a request from the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel and the King Center to mark the moment of Dr. King’s assassination with a solemn tolling of bells, 39 times for the 39 years of Dr. King’s life, the University of Dayton will join a host of churches and organizations throughout Dayton, the nation, and the world in this initiative. At the University of Dayton, bells will ring from the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception; in greater Dayton, among other places, bells will ring from Deeds Carillon.

Celebration of the Arts

6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.: Celebration of the Arts, Schuster Center. The annual Celebration of the Arts will feature various artistic works and performances in observance of the anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination.

Note: The Schuster Center opens for Celebration of the Arts at 6:00 p.m. for the viewing of artistic works in the Wintergarden, followed by performances at 8:00 p.m. in the Mead Theatre.
