Night at the Cotton Club: An Opera/Musical Theatre Performance with the Dayton Jazz Ensemble
08:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Location: Daniel J. Curran Center
Cost: Free and open to the public

This performance will recreate the mood, songs, dance styles and ambiance of the infamous Cotton Club. This is an opportunity to demonstrate and discuss the flourishing of gifted African-American artists in a club that had a "white-only" policy for it's audiences.

Many of the performers who started there, such as Lena Horne, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Dorothy Dandridge, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, Bill "Bo jangles" Robinson, Coleman Hawkins and Sammy Davis Jr. went on to establish national and internationally prominent careers. In addition, it was a gathering place for the celebrities of New York City and Broadway and featured numerous popular revues until its closing in 1940.
