Degrees

  • Ph.D., University of Kentucky, 2014
  • M.Sc., University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, 2006

Profile

Dr. Ju Shen received his Ph.D. in computer science under the leadership of professor Sen-ching Samson Cheung from the University of Kentucky in 2014 and his M.Sc. in computer science from the University of Birmingham, U.K. in 2006. His work spans a number of different areas in computer vision, machine learning, and interactive media. He is a senior member of IEEE society and serves as the journal editor, program chair, area chair, publication chair, and TPC for a number of scientific journals and international conferences. Besides academia, he spent several years in industry, including software development, at B4U Media (Birmingham, U.K., 2006-2008) and research at Hewlett-Packard R&D Lab (Palo Alto, Calif., 2012-13).

Since 2014, Dr. Shen has led the renovation and furnishing of our state-of-the-art virtual reality laboratory with the name: Interactive Visual Media Lab (IVIDIA). The mission of IVIDIA Lab seeks to utilize state-of-the-art technologies in vision, machine learning, and interactive media, to foster the development of virtual reality (VR) applications in various forms of human-computer interactions. The recent effort is to explore the potential educational and therapeutic values of VR technologies for learning and rehabilitation. In addition to research, the IVIDIA lab is also serving undergraduate and graduate students who take independent study courses on topics of virtual and augmented reality to engage with various sensors, headsets, and interactive controllers for VR content creation.
