CPT Joshua Welte was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery in May of 2009 upon graduation from the United States Military Academy. Since his commissioning, CPT Welte has served with 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York and 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia.  CPT Welte’s past assignments include Fire Direction Officer (A/4-25 FA), Platoon Leader (A/4-25 FA), Company Fire Support Officer (D/2-87 IN), Assistant Operations Officer (1-41 FA), Squadron Fire Support Officer (5-7 CAV), and Battery Commander (B/1-41 FA).  CPT Welte has deployed once to Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM XI-XII and three times to Europe in support of OPERATION ATLANTIC RESOLVE. 

While Serving in Afghanistan, CPT Welte was a platoon leader for a M119A2 howitzer platoon conducting a maneuver mission in RC-South and then moved to an infantry company as a fire support officer. While in Europe, CPT Welte coordinated fire support for a NATO combined battalion task force at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center and later coordinated fire support for 5-7 CAV while they conducted training exercises in Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. During the last rotation to Europe, CPT Welte commanded B/1-41 FA while it supported major NATO training exercises in Germany and Poland.

CPT Welte’s military education includes the Basic Officer Leader Course, Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Field Artillery Captain Career Course, US Army Air Assault School, Joint Fires Observer Course, Joint Collateral Damage Estimation Course, Weaponeering Course, Joint Firepower Course, and Foundational Instructor/Facilitator Course.  His undergraduate education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in International History from the US Military Academy.

CPT Welte’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/ Valor, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Medal, and NATO (ISAF) Medal.  His badges include the Combat Action Badge and the Air Assault Badge.

CPT Welte and his wife Emily are both natives of Rockford, Illinois.
