Brother Thomas Giardino, SM

Brother Tom is a native of Cleveland, Ohio where he attended Cathedral Latin School, a Marianist secondary school.  He professed vows in the Society of Mary [Marianists] in 1962 and graduated from the University of Dayton in 1965. He presently serves part-time as the Assistant for Special Projects in the Office for Mission and Rector.

 He is also the Executive Director of the Association of Marianist Universities, which serves UD, St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, and Chaminade University of Honolulu.

 He recently finished serving 23 years as a member of the Board of Trustees for the University of Dayton.  He serves on the Board of St. Mary’s University and also finished a term on the Board of Regents at Chaminade University of Honolulu. 

 From 1991-2001, he worked in Rome as International Director of Education on the SM General Administration serving over 135 educational institutions in the 38 countries in which the SM lived and served.  In that capacity, he led the development and implementation of the Characteristics of Marianist Education for Marianist educational institutions at various levels. He also recently revised the edition of the Characteristics of Marianist Universities.

 Brother Tom’s studies include an undergraduate degree in theology and one in education from the University of Dayton along with a master’s degrees in sociology from Duquesne University and one in spirituality and organizational development from The Catholic University of America. 

 Publications include a chapter entitled “An international Perspective on Catholic Schools” in the book: Catholic School Leadership, An Invitation to Lead, published in 2000.  Brother Giardino also co-authored the books Shaping the Coming Age of Religious Life in 1979 and Behind the Camera in 1970.  In 2011 he published a book entitled:  The Promise and the Path:  Starting and Sustaining Marianist Communities.
