About Us
Welcome to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) at the University of Dayton. ODI staff provides leadership and support for the university’s strategic efforts to advance its work on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Ultimately, our goal is to create and sustain a campus educational community and workplace environment that celebrates and enjoys the gift of diversity, achieves equitable outcomes for individuals and communities regardless of their identities, and to model inclusion throughout the institution. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
Represented on this web site is a major work of public sculpture on the campus of the University of Dayton that stands as a memorial to the speech that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered on the campus on November 29, 1964. Carrying the title Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread, the memorial celebrates the daily work of the Civil Rights Movement, references the religious tradition of Dr. King through the inclusion of a pulpit form and, through the three bronze chairs behind the pulpit, recalls the important role bestowed on communities that heard, supported, and were inspired to carry forward King’s message. The inscriptions on the memorial are drawn from King’s speech of that evening. Among these is King’s refrain “We have come a long, long way, but we have a long, long way to go,” an expression of social commitment and continued resolve that stands at the core of the mission of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The memorial was designed by three colleagues in the University’s Department of Art and Design: art historian Roger J. Crum, designer and typographer John V Clarke, and sculptor and Marianist Brother M. Gary Marcinowski. The work was completed in 2015. View the Memorial Dedication Video
