School of Education and Health Sciences accreditation & performance

The Office of Accreditation serves as the School of Education and Health Science's coordination point for data collection, analysis and reporting required by federal regulations (e.g., Title II), accrediting bodies (Higher Learning Commission & Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) and unit initiatives.

Accrediting bodies

Higher Learning Commission (HLC)

The University of Dayton has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1928. The most recent reaccreditation was received in 2008. The School of Education and Health Sciences, as a unit within the University of Dayton, meets the HLC's standards.

Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)

The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) is a nonprofit and nongovernmental agency that accredits educator preparation providers (EPPs). It was created with the October 2010 consolidation of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) by the boards of the two organizations. CAEP became operational on July 1, 2013.

The University of Dayton received accreditation for its educator preparation programs in spring 2017 by the CAEP Accreditation Council under the CAEP teacher preparation standards — rigorous, nationally recognized standards that were developed to ensure excellence in educator preparation programs.

Educator preparation providers seeking accreditation must pass peer review on five standards, which are based on two principles:

  • Solid evidence that the provider’s graduates are competent and caring educators.
  • Solid evidence that the provider’s educator staff have the capacity to create a culture of evidence and use it to maintain and enhance the quality of the professional programs they offer.

Did you know?: University of Dayton-prepared teachers are effective in the classroom. Since 2014-15, the percent of teachers with Average or higher value-added ratings has increased over ten percentage points. Read the full CAEP Annual Reporting Measures summary here (pdf) >>

Educator Preparation Performance Report

Per the Ohio Department of Higher Education, Ohio recognizes that high-quality teachers and principals are developed through high-quality educator preparation programs. The identification of metrics and the report format were developed in collaboration with representatives from the 13 public and 38 private educator preparation institutions in Ohio, state agencies, and organizations. The Board of Regents works with the Ohio Department of Education and higher education institutions to collect data as represented in the 2016 Institutional Report.
