Educational experiences

Dietetic students often choose a minor in an area of specific interest. Commonly chosen minors that complement the dietetic curriculum and profession include:

  • Biology
  • Business
  • Chemistry
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Foreign Language
  • Psychology
  • Sustainability

Work in the field

Students have an array of options to gain experience in areas of interest in the local area. Such interest areas include clinical, community, food service, and sustainable agricultural-related settings.

Students in the dietetics program work (paid and non-paid) in the following nutrition-related areas:

  • UD Dining Services
  • Chef to Marianist Brother’s Residence
  • Nutrition Ambassadors at Kettering Medical Center, Grandview Hospital, Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton Children’s Hospital and area nursing homes

Students also find nutrition and health-related work at:

  • RecPlex
  • UD Employee Wellness Program
  • Mission of Mary Farms
  • RTA Market
  • Private practice dietitians in the Dayton area
Nationwide opportunities

Students seek out opportunities to work at weight loss camps, diabetes camps, and college sport camps in the summer. The University of Dayton Dietetics program advisers update students regularly about these and other available programs.

International opportunities

Faculty-led study abroad opportunities take place during 4-6 weeks in the summer. Dietetic students can take UD nutrition courses for credit abroad. This experience provides students a rich, experiential-learning opportunity while also earning UD course credits. During these experiences abroad, students gain cultural competency skills and are able to learn about dietetics and nutrition from dietitians around the globe. Currently, we have programs running in Chile, Spain and Peru.
