STREAM ... ing

Image of CCE staff greeting guestsThe National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) held its first symposium for STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) at the University of Dayton, in partnership with the UD Center for Catholic Education, as part of the New Directions Initiative. From Sunday, June 22, to Tuesday, June 24, 2014, more than 240 Catholic school educators were on campus to listen, exchange, experience, and plan for STREAM initiatives in their own schools.

Center staff worked tirelessly with Kathy Mears, Heather Gossart, Lucy Shufflebarger, and Annemarie Fisher, NCEA staff, to ensure a transformative experience for educators attending the symposium. A number of UD professors, including Sister Angela Ann Zukowski, Dr. Shauna Adams, and Dr. Linda Hartley as well as UD alum, Dr. Clare Kilbane, were among the keynote speakers for the Symposium.

Visits to the UD Bombeck Family Learning Center and Chaminade Julienne High School’s STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math & Medicine) labs brought concrete evidence of the implementation of quality STREAM best practice.

The days of the Symposium were energizing to participants, presenters and planners. Best of all, evidence of the impact of the Symposium are already seen through action plans taking shape in Catholic schools.

Moving Forward With STREAM Education

UD Alum Dr. Pam Bernards contributed an article that exemplifies this implementation to the NCEA Elementary Schools Department Newsletter. Dr. Bernard now serves as Principal of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in the Diocese of Orlando. Massive Open Online Course

The conversation continues for participants through a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) created by the NCEA Elementary Schools Department. Innovation and need for eyes and hearts open to adaptation and change in our times are moving Catholic education in new directions to infuse Catholic identity, our faith into the curriculum as the Lord asks of us.

With God, all things are possible.
