NCEA Presentations

image of NCEA logoThis past year we were fortunate to have the opportunity to present at the National Catholic Educational Association Conference (NCEA).  Dr. Shauna Adams and Susan Ferguson presented two sessions. The first session focused on the implementation of STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum in Catholic schools. The session was very well attended which reflected the growing interest in STREAM curriculum at the national level. STREAM curricula focus the integration of subject areas around real world problems, typically related to science or engineering.  With Pope Francis’s new encyclical on the environment, STREAM has emerged as one approach to embed Catholic identity throughout the curriculum. One outcome from this STREAM presentation was scheduling a follow-up meeting with NCEA, other Catholic universities and Catholic school practitioners to continue a dialog on how Catholic higher education can support STREAM curriculum through a national STREAM initiative.

The second presentation focused on Family Engagement with approximately 50-75 in attendance.  It was a timely topic given the emphasis that Pope Francis has put on the family when he recently attended the World Meeting of Families Festival in Philadelphia, PA.  The research-based principles of family engagement require a paradigm shift for many schools. This presentation was the first of what we hope will be many in the years to come.
