National Conference on Family and Community Engagement - Shaping Our Future by Leading Together

ucdrc handoutThe Empowering Children with Hope and Opportunity staff (formerly the Urban Child Development Resource Center) was given the opportunity to attend the National Family and Community Engagement Conference held in Chicago in June. Rhonda Mercs and Michelle Sherman were given this opportunity through their involvement with the Family Engagement Collaborative (FEC).  They shared what they learned at several follow-up collaborative meetings.

The conference included a variety of breakout sessions. The focus of these sessions was learning how other organizations across the country are engaging families. One organization shared their success with parent-teacher home visits. The program was successful in building a trusting relationship between home and school. In a parent interview, the parent expressed how she appreciated the teacher taking time to share the “good things” her child was doing in class.

The ECHO staff greatly benefited from the conference. Numerous ideas were created on how to engage the families that ECHO serves.
