Steven Borchers is a renaissance man.

Steven HeadshotLearning how to see similarities in different experiences is a tough task that only time and dedication can solve. When you only look at an event for what it did for you in that moment, and that moment only, you are putting it in a box of which it cannot escape. To confine an event in time is to confine your growth as a human. Constantly updating your thoughts on specific events lets you know how much you have changed over time. It gives you insight on what you need to change in your life. Nothing happens in a vacuum and the more you consciously realize that the more you’ll appreciate learning new things.

  • Steven Borchers is a renaissance man. Anyone who is involved with as much as he is may find it natural to compartmentalize each activity. However, Steven understands that everything he does is a learning experience waiting to be applied to the next experience.
  • “Working in Dr. Singh’s research lab, Reach Out and Audio Pilots has taught me many skills working both with people and technology I know little about,” Steven said. “In some cases, I needed to learn from others and watch what they did before I completed my own work and in others, I had to research my own way of teaching and solving problems.”
  • Learning from others is essential in any experiential learning opportunity. Nobody knows everything, and if you go into a situation thinking that, you won’t learn anything. It is a good rule to always believe someone has something to tell you that you don’t know. If you believe that, you will find ways to learn from almost any situation thrown at you. As an undergraduate researcher and music director, Steven has forged an independent mind for himself, but he is well aware of the fact that collaboration is always essential for success.
  • “In Dr. Singh’s genetics research lab I learned from my more experienced lab mates and then worked mostly on my own when conducting research on my specific project,” he said.
  • Mentors are a very important part of experiential learning due to the knowledge they carry as well-versed adults. Mentors are needed to guide you along the correct path so you are making accurate connections between the experience itself and other areas of your life. A mentor is there to help you discover realizations yourself, not to to give them to you. If a mentor were to tell you what to think it wouldn't’t mean much compared to if you came to that realization on your own. It’s the collaboration between teacher and learner that helps makes an experience special.
  • Collaboration between peers is also an important part of personal growth with an experience. The prosperity that comes with successful collaboration hints back at that rule to always believe someone knows something you don’t. Steven notes how collaboration made his work more effective.
  • “Audio Pilots showed me how to work with a larger group of students and how to be a more effective teacher by experimenting with teaching styles,” he said. “Reach Out is a bridge between the research I conducted and Audio Pilots. Volunteering in the free clinic I not only had to learn from other volunteers about how a medical clinic works but I also had doctors, nurses, and other volunteers relying on those learned skills so we could work together as a cohesive unit.”
  • Steven looks toward the future to develop himself as someone who people look up to for help. He wants to use his medical knowledge to heal those who need him. His hope is to use the blessings that he has been given to advance his medical knowledge and give back to the people who have not had the same opportunities.
