Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics has a long tradition of innovative research enriched by renowned faculty with real-world experience.

Our focus is to advance state-of-art design of civil systems and lead efforts in sustainable infrastructure development.

Our project sponsors include the National Science Foundation, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the United States Air Force, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and numerous water and waste water agencies in the Dayton area.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the civil engineering and engineering mechanics graduate programs should submit the following information in addition to the online application:

  1. Official academic records of all previously attended colleges or universities must be submitted directly from the colleges or universities to the Office of Graduate Admission Processing. Hand-carried transcripts, official copies marked Issued to Student and unofficial copies are not acceptable.
  2. Three letters of recommendation from professors or employers.
  3. A personal statement or résumé indicating your preferred area of concentration.
  4. Results from the GRE are not required. However, candidates are welcome to submit a score in support of their application. 

Additional requirements apply for international students.

Academic Requirements: 
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited program in engineering, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics or other appropriate program of study. Applicants with a different undergraduate degree may be required to complete prerequisites. Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Some programs require higher GPAs for admission. 

Additional Information:
Graduate assistantships are available; however, restrictions may apply to international students. Some of the graduate assistantships are at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and require citizenship or permanent residency. Please contact individual programs for details.
