2018 Bike Month Events for UD

It’s time to join in the fun! Faculty, staff and students are welcome, as are family members and friends, to participate in UD's events celebrating National Bike Month, community, and healthy and sustainable lifestyles.

Department Challenge:  The department with the most Bike to Work Day participants receives a rotating trophy to display for the whole year. Gather your co-workers and join in the civil competition! Be sure to mark your department on the google form!

Faculty and staff who register and participate can receive 10 points per activity toward their Activity Health Tracker (if eligible), with a maximum of 30 points for Bike Month events.

Sunday, April 22, noon - 4 p.m., Old River Park
Join Campus Rec in this celebration of Earth Day with outdoor activities.
EarthDay ride — meet at 11 a.m. at RecPlex for an hour ride along the Great Miami River toward RiverScape and back, ending at EarthFest. Bring your own bike or check out a bike (free for Rec members or $8 for a day Rec membership). Registration appreciated!

Wednesdays on Two Wheels
Wednesdays, April 25 - May 30, ride leaves at 6 p.m. near Tipp City.
Join Dr. Mary Buchwalder, UD Medical Director, as she and her husband lead a brisk weekly ride. Total length is 25 miles, pace 15 mph+. Meet at the former PECo parking lot at the corner of Ohio 202 and Studebaker Road, Tipp City. See UD Bikes MeetUp for details.

Bicycles For All
Wednesday, May 2, 5 p.m.
Students, as well as faculty and staff, are invited to learn more about Bicycles for All, a nonprofit which promotes community bicycling. Meet at RecPlex (bring your own bike or check one out at the Rec if you’re a member) and be ready to ride by 5 p.m. on a 2.5-mile guided trip to the historic Armory Building on East Sixth Street at Jefferson for a tour of the facility. Among the nonprofit’s activities is volunteer rehabbing of donated bikes for Dayton area children, and riders are welcome to stay to lend a hand. Registration appreciated!

Fly Ride
Wednesday, May 9, noon - 1 p.m., RecPlex
Faculty, staff and students are invited for a friendly ride from campus to Courthouse Square for a food truck lunch and live entertainment. Open to all; bring a friend. Bring your own bike or check out a bike (free for Campus Rec members or $8 for a day Rec membership). Weather permitting. Registration appreciated!

Power to the Pedal:  Bicycling, Commuting and Your Carbon Footprint
Tuesday, May 15, noon - 12:50 p.m., KU 310
What is a carbon footprint and why should I care? What impact does bicycling have on my footprint? What if I don't have a bike - can I still reduce my commuting footprint? Explore these questions and more at the Bike Month brown bag. Join Hanley Sustainability Institute and Facilities Management staff for a fun and enlightening conversation combining personal wellness and care for our common home. Registration appreciated!

Bike to Work Day
Friday, May 18, 7 - 9 a.m., RiverScape
Enjoy free pancakes and good company with bicyclists from UD and throughout the region, plus help Team UD retain our place as the Workplace Challenge champions by having the most riders register at RiverScape under the name “Team UD.” The region’s annual Bike to Work pancake breakfast is hosted by Five Rivers MetroParks. Rain or shine (canceled in case of dangerous weather, like lightning); please wear your helmet. Registration appreciated!

  • Starting location: Meet in front of RecPlex by 7 a.m. to ride with the group, or meet us at RiverScape by 8:15 a.m. for a group photo on the west side of the stage. You can join Team UD for a ride back to campus, with groups leaving at 8:15, 8:30 and 8:45 a.m.
  • Who: I Love UD dark blue T-shirts are available to the first 35 who register. Faculty and staff (active or retired), undergraduate and graduate students, friends and family are all welcome; encourage them to register at RiverScape as Team UD. To get your pancakes more quickly, sign up ahead of time with MetroParks and move to the rapid check-in line when you arrive.
  • Bikes: Bring your own; grab a Link Bike; or check out a RecBike from RecPlex. RecBikes are available for all campus riders for the Bike to Work Day breakfast ride. Reserve a bike by visiting or calling the RecPlex Welcome Desk (229-2704) or main office (229-2731) during open hours. Reserved bikes may be picked up from the RecPlex Equipment Issuance Desk between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m. on the day of the ride. A UD ID card and signed digital waiver are required at checkout. Reserved bikes not checked out by 6:45 a.m. will be released to ready riders onsite. No fee or Campus Rec membership required.

Bike to the Dragons
Sunday, May 20, 2:00 p.m.
Enjoy an afternoon of bicycling and baseball, with valet bike parking at Fifth Third Field and free admission to the first 50 riders who register through MVRCP.

Bike Smarts Lunch & Learn - Laura Estandia
Thursday, May 24, noon - 1 p.m., KU Room 310
All are invited to get connected to the Dayton bike scene by joining HR Wellness and Bike Miami Valley to learn about bicyclist opportunities in the Dayton Area. Topics for the lunchtime session include free and low-cost options for getting a bike (including LinkBikes), where to ride, maintaining bikes, why bike and SMART cycling. Registration appreciated!
