2019 Bike Month Events for UD

It’s time to join in the fun! Faculty, staff and students are welcome, as are family members and friends, to participate in UD's events celebrating National Bike Month, community, and healthy and sustainable lifestyles.

Faculty and staff who register and participate can receive 10 points per activity toward their Activity Health Tracker (if eligible), with a maximum of 30 points for Bike Month events.

Wednesdays on Two Wheels
Wednesdays April 24 - May 22, ride leaves promptly at 6 p.m. near Tipp City.  Join Dr. Mary Buchwalder, UD medical director, as she and her husband lead a brisk weekly ride. Total length is 26 miles, average pace 15-20 mph. Meet at the former PECo parking lot at the corner of Ohio 202 and Studebaker Road, Tipp City. No registration required. EarthFest Ride
11:30 a.m. Sunday, April 28
Start at RecPlex for an ride along the Great Miami River toward RiverScape and back, ending at EarthFest at Old Fiver Park. Bring your own bike or check out a bike from RecPlex. Open to students, faculty & staff. Details at UDCRoutdoor@udayton.edu.

RecBike Ride to Miamisburg
Sunday, May 5th, 1-3:30pm
Join a leisurely 12 mile group bicycle ride along the beautiful Great Miami Riverway from campus to Miamisburg where you can treat yourself to a tasty treat at one of the cute downtown bakeries. We will pass two American Bald Eagle nests along this route! For the return to campus, jump in our shuttle van or extend your workout with a ride back to campus. Borrow a RecBike or bring your own. Preregister at the RecPlex Welcome Desk to reserve aRecBike. Check-in at the Campus Recreation Welcome Desk ready to go by the scheduled program start time.

Ride to Medlar Conservation Area with Five Rivers MetroParks
9 a.m. Saturday, May 11; meet at Riverfront Park, 3 N. Miami Ave., Miamisburg
Five Rivers MetroParks challenges you to Get Out & Bike by participating in the Bike for Health Challenge, a series of self-guided, ride at your own pace rides. This 10-mile guided bike ride is on the Great Miami and Great-Little Trails. Waiver, rules and info on logging your miles is at www.metroparks.org/bikehealth.

Tuesday Morning Rides
Tuesdays through the summer, starting May 14
Meet at the front entrance of the Rec, parking lot C side, at around 6:50 a.m. We leave at 7 a.m. sharp and ride the bike path to West Carrollton or downtown and back, about 15 miles. Everyone rides at their own pace, as far as they want to go, and then we return. See UD Bikes MeetUp for details.

Power to the Pedal: Bicycling, Commuting, and Your Carbon Footprint

Description:  What is a carbon footprint and why should I care? What impact does bicycling have on my footprint? What if I don't have a bike -- can I still reduce my commuting footprint? Explore these questions and more at the Bike Month brown bag. Join Hanley Sustainability Institute and Facilities Management staff for a fun and enlightening conversation combining personal wellness and care for our common home. Bike to Work Day
Friday, May 17, 7 - 9 a.m., RiverScape
Enjoy free pancakes and good company with bicyclists from UD and throughout the region, plus help UD regain its place as the Workplace Challenge champions by having the most riders register at RiverScape under the name “Team UD.” The region’s annual Bike to Work pancake breakfast is hosted by Five Rivers MetroParks. Rain or shine (canceled in case of dangerous weather, like lightning); please wear your helmet. Registration required (can also do at RiverScape day of).

  • Starting location:  Meet in front of RecPlex by 7 a.m. to ride with the group, or meet us at RiverScape by 8:15 a.m. for a group photo on the west side of the stage. You can join Team UD for a ride back to campus, with groups leaving at 8:15, 8:30 and 8:45 a.m.
  • Who:  Faculty and staff (active or retired), undergraduate and graduate students, friends and family are all welcome; everyone should register as Team UD. Your UD registration will automatically register you with the MetroParks, so you can go to rapid check-in onsite and get your pancakes more quickly.
  • Bikes:  Bring your own; grab a Link Bike; or check out a RecBike from RecPlex free for all campus riders for the Bike to Work Day. Reserve a bike by visiting or calling the RecPlex Welcome Desk (229-2704) or main office (229-2731) during open hours. Reserved bikes may be picked up from the RecPlex Equipment Issuance Desk between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m. on the day of the ride. A UD ID card and signed digital waiver are required at checkout.
  • Department Challenge:  The department with the most Bike to Work Day participants receives a rotating trophy to display for the whole year. Gather your co-workers and join in the civil competition! Be sure to mark your department on the google form!

50 States, 50 Centuries: Exploring roads and roadkill around the U.S. on two wheels
Tuesday, May 21, 12-12:50 PM, UD Outdoor Engagement Center, 438 Stonemill Rd
Join avid cyclist Dr. Mary Buchwalder, UD medical director, as she shares pictures and slides of the adventures she and husband, Mark, have had while riding 100 mile one-day rides in many different states. What is the weirdest roadkill so far? Bring a lunch for this fun interactive hour. Registration appreciated.

Covered Bridge Tour with the Dayton Cycling Club
Saturday, June 1, 7:30 AM, Brookville High School parking lot
UD Medical Director Mary Buchwalder ’82 and her husband, Mark Buchwalder ’82, organize a ride through the country. Choose your route: 20, 42, 70 and 103 miles. Visit two to 11 covered bridges on this rolling to hilly ride. $10 for non-Dayton Cycling Club members includes map and marked routes. Sign up day of ride only (no pre-registration). Registration from 7:30-8:00 AM. No food/drink supplied — bring money or your own food. See link below for more details. Be prepared for the weather and to fix your own flat tires, etc. This is NOT a "no-drop" ride, but if you're concerned bring a friend to ride with. NO RESTROOMS AT THE START.
