Mediatrix, Rejection of Dogma

Mediatrix, Rejection of Dogma

Q: Why did the Roman Commission reject Mediatrix as a dogma?

A: The dogmatization of the title Mediatrix of All Graces was rejected by the Roman Commission (1942-1944), and ultimately by Pius XII, because of Mary's need for redemption. She couldn't possibly mediate her own salvation. Mediation is a relative term and can be applied to various degrees of mediating from mediating the incarnation of Christ -- the ultimate form of Marian mediation -- to the mediating function of her being a model of Christian faith. There is a connotation of active passivity, of conduit rather than source, involved in Mary's mediation. Co-redemption suggests a partnership of (quasi-) equality. Mary is made the co-author of redemption. The reality of subordination is easier and better stressed with the term mediation.
