AFTER THOUGHT

The preceding pages list my published works, dating from 1963 to the present. There may be a few pieces that been overlooked, but those listed are in print and available from the various publishers. There are 136 numerical titles, as of August 17, 2006. Possibly, this list will be expanded in the future.

The numbers can be misleading, since many of the numbered titles contain several sections, each of which could stand as an individual composition. So I went through my various binders and folders to attempt a loose count of the number of pieces actually written. As of May 20, 2005, I reached 1,073 individual pieces before I stopped counting. Since that date, there have been quite a few Antiphons commissioned by the Norbertines for their Liturgy of the Hours Books, and I do not much care to do a recount.

Of course, there is no way of knowing an exact count of the unfinished and work copies that ended up in the wastebasket, nor of the countless pieces that I wrote for my Communities, but never sent to a publisher.

All of my writings, with very few exceptions, were written for liturgical use.

Fr. Paul Vieson, SM, Archivist at the University of Dayton, said he would be interested in having all of my collected works. therefore I am forwarding them to him.

2. By the Streams of Babylon (Symposium for Church Composers, Milwaukee Cathedral, 1982; another recording on Tape Three, Side A at Number 1 recorded by World Library Publications Choir) (See List of Music, number 18)

TAPE THREE: Music composed by Howard Hughes and performed by different groups on various occasions. Expect recordings to be uneven.

A. 1. By the Streams of Babylon (See List of Music, number 18) Recorded by World Library Publications Choir
2. Lamb of God: Te Deum (Original setting heard here) It was performed from manuscript at the Milwaukee Symposium, 1990. The cantor mistakenly sang English throughout, even while the SATB choir sang in Latin. I used Latin only because the bishops had requested "a liuttle Latin" for the Bicentennial of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Oct. 22, 1989, at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. The Latin was intended for the SATB choir only and the cantor was to lead the congregation in its response in English. To make the piece more attractive to a publisher, I rewrote the manuscript using only English. This piece may be performed simply with cantor, congregation, and organ. (See List of Music, number 120)
3. O Queen of Heaven (See List of Music, number 102) Recorded by World Library Publications Choir
4. Make Us One in Christ (See List of Music, number 117) Recorded by Blessed Sacrament Church, Alexandria, Virginia, who commissioned the piece; text by Peter C. Finn of ICEL.
