Our Lady of Pilar

Our Lady of Pilar

Q: What is the origin of Our Lady of Pilar?

A: The Marian feast of October 12 corresponds to Our Lady of Pilar. The sanctuary of this title is in Zaragoza, Spain (not Barcelona or Montserrat, even though the celebration would be a national one). The shrine is a very early one; it is related to the apostle James' apostolic activity in Spain. According to the legend, Mary on behalf of her Son appeared to James to boost his morale. She was seen on a pillar or column which gave its name to the shrine.
