– compiled by Brother Raymond Boutin

Commemorating the April 27, 2014 Canonization of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II

April 27, 2014 marks the canonization of John XXIII (1881-1963) and John Paul II (1920-2005). The stamps displayed here commemorate some events of their life and pontificate. It is our way of honoring two saints of our time.

Pope John XXIII and Events of His Pontificate

The following sixteen stamps were issued during or after his pontificate and highlight important events.

Pope John Paul II and Mary on "First-Day Covers"

The stamps commemorating John Paul II's pontificate are numerous. Many of them retrace his many pastoral visits to the five continents. The Marian Library's stamp collection has a great number of these travel stamps, among them 400 "first-day covers." First-day covers are envelopes with the stamp of the country in the upper right corner and the person or event to be commemorated in the body of the envelope, frequently presented artfully and in color. We have selected fifteen first-day covers which show Pope John Paul II and the Virgin Mary in different countries and with different representations of Our Lady.
