Transportation and Shopping
As a new international student at the University of Dayton, we understand that some of your most urgent needs are basic ones. That’s why we’ve compiled this list for you. You will notice in some cases we list which options are most popular among students. These findings are based on surveys and meant to be informative but should not be interpreted as official endorsements.
There are three major airport in and around the Dayton area. They are:
- Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky International Airport, 1.5 hours away
- Port Columbus International Airport, 1.5 hours away
- Dayton International Airport, 20 minutes away
We strongly encourage students to arrive to Dayton International Airport due its close distance to campus.
Below are transportation options for students arriving to Dayton International Airport:
The Center for International Programs (CIP) provides free transportation from the Dayton International Airport to campus before the start of each term. Check the Important Dates page to see when this service is offered.
Although this service is free, it must still be requested and approved by our office. Click here to apply. Submit your request at least 7 days before your flight arrives to ensure pick-up. If your request is approved, a driver will be waiting for you at the airport when you arrive to transport you to campus.
If arriving outside of our service times, you will be responsible for arranging your own transportation.
For those living on campus, pay close attention to the date housing opens. If you are required to live on campus (or have requested to live on campus) and arrive prior to this date, you will not be able to access your room. Additionally, you will be responsible for arranging temporary accommodations and the associated costs.
Please plan your arrival carefully, ensuring that you have 1) transportation and 2) housing finalized well in advance of departing your country.
You can call for a taxi once you arrive to the airport and one will arrive within 15 minutes of your request. The trip from the airport to the University of Dayton takes approximately 20 minutes and costs $30-$35 before tax. Payment in cash or credit card (must show passport) is acceptable. In the U.S., it is also customary to give a tip (gratuity) of 10-15% to the driver. For example, if your taxi ride costs $40, you should pay an additional $4-6 in gratuity.

Residence halls, apartments, and houses owned by the University are already furnished. Visit Housing and Residence Life's Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
If you need additional furnishing or are living off campus, be sure to verify what items will be included in your room. Some students find it convenient to rent furniture rather than buying it. If this option interests you, consider CORT, a furniture rental company that specializes in helping international students. Visit CORT's website to learn more.
