Meet David Laton, President of the Intellectual Property Law Society

David Laton

David Laton, a second-year law student, is president of the Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS) at the University of Dayton School of Law. One of the law school’s largest student-run organizations, IPLS hosts events and guest speakers throughout the year and provides networking opportunities for students.

As president of IPLS, David is responsible for coordinating the organization’s impressive slate of guest speakers. Brian Wassom from the Honigman law firm spoke at IPLS’s first meeting of the semester on September 12.  Next Tuesday, October 8, Professor Oliver Goodenough from Vermont Law School will speak at Keller Hall from 7:00 to 8:30. His lecture entitled “Private Action and State-Based Solutions: Meaningful Responses to Current Intellectual Property Dilemmas” will discuss the need for creative legal frameworks to support the needs of those creating and investing in intellectual property.

When asked why he chose Dayton Law for his legal education, David noted that “Dayton Law’s enthusiasm for intellectual property law and the Program in Law and Technology were the main reasons I chose to come to this school.” David is interested in copyright and trademark law and would like to pursue a career in one of those areas. As for location, David says “my family lives in Pennsylvania but I would welcome the opportunity to remain in the Dayton area.”

David received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Allegheny College located in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
