Learn at Lunch Series another Resource for Job Hunters

UDSL students have a new mechanism to assist them in their job search. The Learn at Lunch series, launched earlier this year, is designed to help students improve skills need to land a job. The series invites working attorneys and employers to share with student practical knowledge and advice. In one program, attorneys talked to student about what they look for in an employee when making hiring decisions.

Julie Jackson, Assistant Director of Career Services, said the series expands programs from the Career Services Office that traditionally have helped students improve their job-search skills. "The Learn at Lunch series furthers this objective by inviting employers to advise students on sharpening their resume writing, networking, and interviewing skills to better market themselves in today's economy," she said.

The series has featured two programs so far: in January, William Jordan, general counsel and executive vice president of DSW, Inc., and Marc Amos, an attorney with Taft, Stettinius & Hollister, talked to students about "Networking, Drafting and Sending Resumes"; then in early March, UDSL alumni Greg Kaskey '00 of Dinsmore and Shohl in Dayton and Dayton attorney Nancy Roberson '81 discussed "Tips for Successful Interviewing and Getting the Offer."

The series is hosted by the UDSL Student Bar Association, the Academic Success Program, the Career Services Office and the Advancement office. The Ohio State Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section Law Student Committee also co-sponsored the January program, which was attended by approximately 65 students.

Dan Skinner, President of the School's Student Bar Association, said the SBA started the Learn at Lunch series because "we realized the difficulty students were having in finding a legal job." The programs in the series will help "equip students with practical and necessary tools to help them engage in a successful job search this summer," Skinner said. "We believe that the tips and skills gained through the Learn at Lunch series will help students at every stage in the job search chain"
