Students Connect with Legal Community at Externship Fair

The UDSL Externship Office held its second Externship Fair on February 4. The turnout was tremendous. More than 100 students met with representatives of almost 50 law firms, government agencies, courts and businesses during the fair. The fair provided an opportunity for lawyers and judges to recruit and interview eligible students for externships in the 2010-2011 academic year.

Denise Platfoot-Lacey said the fair was another example of the legal community's eager participation in UDSL's Externship Program, providing opportunities to students to develop their skills in true legal apprenticeships. "Participation in this year's Externship Fair was no exception," she said, "with many of the offices in attendance offering externship positions to multiple students. We appreciate our partnerships with all of the offices that extend externship offers to our students and enjoy working together to facilitate our students' active learning."

Several field supervisors who participated in the fair were impressed with students' eagerness to get legal experience, and were also pleased with the level of preparation and professionalism displayed by many students seeking externships.

"Students were encouraged to ask the interviewers about practice areas and the types of assignments that might get assigned to an extern," said Externship Supervisor Monique Lampke. "Knowing this information can help a student secure an externship placement that is a good fit and will give them solid and practical legal experience to prepare them for the practice of law."

Next year's Externship Fair will be held February 3, 2011.
