Alumni Weekend Auction Helps Students Perform Pro Bono Work

A special event will highlight the All-Alumni Dinner on Saturday, May 15, during Alumni Weekend: the Public Interest Law Auction, which raises funds to support UDSL students who perform pro bono work over the summer. Those who participate in the auction not only help our students, but also those desperately in need of legal assistance.

Funds from the auction go to law students via the Dayton Law Public Interest Award, a stipend of $1,500 to $3,000, which helps provide living expenses for selected students working in public interest law internships. To qualify, a student's work must either be unpaid or draw only a small stipend. Without these awards for living expenses, many students would be financially unable to undertake public interest work.

Last year, award recipients worked for such organizations as Legal Aid of Western Ohio, the Dayton Unit of the NAACP and the Office of the Ohio Public Defender.

Alumni can help support the UDSL's efforts by donating items to the auction. Popular items include, but are in no way limited to, use of a vacation home, tickets to a sporting or cultural event, gift certificates, professional services, electronics, jewelry, art, antiques, wine or spirits and gourmet food items.

"Service to community is at the heart of the School's Marianist charism," said Dean of Students Lori Shaw. "We want to recognize celebrate, and assist those students seeking to make legal services available to the poor and marginalized members of society. Our students make a real difference in their communities."

Register Now for 2010 Alumni Weekend

The Public Interest Law Auction is just one of many exciting activities planned for the 2010 Alumni Weekend, which will be held Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15. Alumni Weekend will also include the Alumni Awards Luncheon, a CLE program, community service opportunities and the Alumni Dinner. Alumni Weekend is for all graduates, though special receptions will be held for the Classes of '80, '85, '90, '95, '00 and '05.

The Distinguished Alumni Award and the Honorable Walter H. Rice Honorary Alumni Award will be presented during the Alumni Awards Luncheon.

The CLE will include presentations by Adjunct Professor Ira Mickenberg, who will discuss "The Art of Persuasion: Using Pictures, Charts, Graphics & Videos in Your Legal Writing"; the Rev. Phillip Eichner, S.M., who will discuss "Lawyers as Ethicists"; and UDSL Professor E. Dale Searcy, who will discuss "Taxes and Estate Planning."

This year, alumni are encouraged to get together with their classmates and sponsor tables during the Alumni Dinner. Each table seats eight. All attorneys sitting at a sponsored table will be able to attend the alumni CLE program on May 14 for free.
Community Service Project

Dayton Law Alumni will volunteer at the Men's Gateway Shelter, 1921 South Gettysburg Avenue, on May 15 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Volunteers will provide a midmorning snack for 200-240 guests at 10 a.m. Set up will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Additional volunteers will participate in an outside clean-up project at the shelter. Volunteers will pick up trash, trim weeds and plant marigolds in a small flowerbed. The project will be held rain or shine, so volunteers should dress according to the weather.

Volunteers are asked to bring the following items: rakes, ponchos, trash bags, weed eaters and/or basic trimmers or clippers, two flats of marigolds and a snack and paper products. Mike Ledbetter has volunteered to bring flowers, potting soil, snacks, drinks and leaf bags.
