Hon. Mary Kate Huffman leading Dayton Law Alumni

Earlier this year, Judge Mary Kate Huffman was elected president of the University of Dayton School of Law Alumni Association. A 1990 graduate, she officially began her new position on the association's Board of Trustees during the School of Law"s Alumni Weekend in May.

Judge Huffman has been a judge on the Montgomery County, Ohio, Court of Common Pleas General Division since 2002, and has presided over the Common Pleas Court"s Drug Court since 2007.

She is the first sitting judge to serve as Alumni Association president.

"The University of Dayton School of Law provided an excellent foundation on which to start my legal career," Judge Huffman said. "It"s an honor to have this opportunity to lead the Alumni Association and give back to the School of Law."

In 2007, Judge Huffman was honored with the School of Law"s Distinguished Alumni Award for demonstrating a sustained dedication to the values of justice, ethics and integrity during her distinguished legal career.

She is an active member of the School of Law Alumni Association, and has enthusiastically helped with alumni volunteer recruitment and Dayton Law"s annual Alumni Weekend.

In addition to serving on the Common Pleas Court, Judge Huffman is also an adjunct faculty member at the School of Law, where she teaches a variety of courses, including Interviewing, Counseling and Negotiation, Evidence and Trial Practice, Business Organizations, Criminal Sanctioning and Business Ethics.

As an adjunct professor, she is a favorite among students. Alumni have called her "extremely welcoming and accepting," saying that she "provides exceptional guidance and inspiration." In 2008 she was honored by Dayton Law students with the Commitment to the Community Award.

Tim Stonecash, assistant dean for external relations, said the School of Law is excited to have Judge Huffman leading the Alumni Association.

"The Alumni Association has been very fortunate over the years to have been led by enthusiastic and thoughtful presidents who have had a sincere interest in the continued success of the school of law, its alumni and students," he said. "I know that Kate will continue in that tradition. She brings fresh ideas and strong ties to the community and other alumni around the country."
