Eric Chaffee Named Director of Faculty Research

Professor and Director of Faculty Research Eric ChaffeeProfessor Eric C. Chaffee has been named the first director of faculty research at the University of Dayton School of Law, Dean Paul E. McGreal announced.

“Eric is a highly productive scholar, and he works tirelessly to bring a steady stream of outstanding scholarly presentations to Keller Hall each semester,” McGreal said.

In this new position, Chaffee will assist and support the faculty in producing high quality scholarship and in promoting that scholarship. He will also organize scholarly presentations by law school faculty and faculty from other institutions and help recognize faculty research and writing.

“The director of faculty research will facilitate the research of all law school faculty engaged in scholarly work,” McGreal said. “Our faculty produces outstanding research. As director, Eric will help his colleagues make the most of their scholarly efforts and reach a wider audience.”

Chaffee said he would build on the faculty’s past success and work to improve both the scholarly environment and the scholarly conversation among the faculty at the School of Law.

“There are a lot of talented faculty at UDSL,” Chaffee said. “My job is to help them continue to produce great work and help to make sure that it gets recognized.”

“Dayton has an excellent scholarly environment,” he said. “Communicating that to the rest of the legal academy and the rest of the legal community is really important.”

Chaffee said he was interested in the position of director of faculty research because he wanted to support the work the School of Law as an institution. “I’ve always been interested in how nonprofits function and achieve their mission,” Chaffee said. “As a nonprofit, the School of Law has a lot to offer the legal profession and legal community, and I’m pleased to take on an additional role in serving this institution.”

Chaffee, who joined the School of Law in 2006, is also chair of the Project for Law and Business Ethics, which explores the role of law and lawyers in promoting the ethical operation of business entities.

His scholarship currently focuses on financial regulatory reform with an emphasis on international regulation and regulation of the Internet. He is regularly invited to speak at symposia, conferences, workshops and other events in the United States and abroad. He has recently spoken at a variety of prestigious institutions, including Harvard Law School, Georgetown University Law Center and Brown University. His speaking engagements include such locations as Athens, Greece; Leipzig, Germany; Prague, Czech Republic; and Ottawa, Canada.  

He received his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and his B.A., in English and philosophy, from The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the Dayton Law faculty, Chaffee was an attorney with Jones Day, where he handled civil and criminal matters and gained practical experience in numerous areas of law. Throughout his career, he has worked with numerous nonprofit organizations.
