Klick Award

The Brother Walter Klick, S.M. Award provides a scholarship to returning full or part-time sophomore or junior students with a major or minor in teacher education. Award criteria include financial need, a good academic record, and personal characteristics reflecting the Marianist tradition.


The Brother Walter Klick, S.M., Library Award was established by Dr. Nicoletta M. Hary of the University Libraries with funds from the Lackner Award, which was presented to her in 1990 by the UD Marianists. It is administered by a standing committee of the University Libraries

Who is Eligible

Students with a major or minor in Teacher Education, both full and part-time, who are current sophomores or juniors, (i.e., those who will be juniors or seniors in fall 2019), are eligible for this award.

Brother Walter Klick, S.M.

Brother Walter Klick,S.M., a native of Cleveland, entered the Marianist Novitiate after graduating from Cathedral Latin High in 1930. He took his first vows on October 12, 1931. During his long teaching career he taught grade school, and high school students in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Dayton, Puerto Rico, and Cincinnati. In 1954 he earned his M.A. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He directed UD's Wohlleben Library until its closing in 1970.

Award Criteria 

Criteria used for award selection include financial need, a good academic record, a strong faculty recommendation, and personal characteristics which reflect the Marianist tradition. Applicants must write a brief essay of no more than 750 words. Past winners addressed each criterion clearly in their essay.

Application Instructions

To be considered for the award, please submit a completed application form by Friday, February 15, 2019. Applicants are also required to secure a recommendation from a faculty member, who must email his or her letter of recommendation to the Klick Committee Chair. Faculty letters of recommendation should be emailed to klick@udayton.edu. The applicant's personal statement and faculty letters of recommendation should address the award criteria as stated above.

This year, the Brother Walter Klick, S.M. Award will provide a $250 scholarship for the fall semester. Applicants should be aware that receiving this award could affect other financial aid.
